Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent. ‘Black history’ should be part of mainstream history lessons (Picture: Getty/Myles Goode) It’s October, which means it’s. Yet BHM wouldn’t be needed if the full history of this country and its black contribution were taught in our schools. Academics, researchers and community groups have begun uncovering a history that has, for too long, remained untold: how black Britons shaped the UK’s culture and society from its earliest times. Black, Asian and other minority communities have been a part of British history centuries before slavery, the Windrush generation, the Battle of Trafalgar, the Second World War and the procession of Indian officers marching to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. BBC historian David Olusoga’s shows highlight that there has always been black in the Union Jack. So many people think the history of black Britain begins with slavery: in fact, there is evidence of Africans living in the UK dating back to Roman Britain. About 1,800 years ago,. Not to mention the term ‘black’ is so vague, it’s both inclusive and exclusive. Does the black include all African nationalities? Caribbean islands? British BHM stories tend to focus on the Empire Windrush era in 1948 from Jamaica to London, but so many Africans and Caribbeans from countries further afield have black history in the UK too. Where are those stories? ‘We could make a BHM bingo card where Mandela, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X will appear’ (Picture: Getty) I used to look forwards to celebrating great black achievers in October. When working at MTV UK, we would make TV packages about Granville T Woods, Moira Stewart, Trevor McDonald, Lennox Lewis, Jazzie B and more. A few years on and I feel I can predict what kids across the UK will be taught again this October. We could make a BHM bingo card where Mandela, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X will appear. ![]() ![]() ![]()
